The River In Winter

I took these shots in December of the Rideau River, in two locations. The first one was from the commuter train passing over the bridge on its way south from Carleton University. The buildings you see are part of the campus. The river here is wild and swift, with rapids, reflecting the fast current downstream from Hog's Back Falls. Still, a good part of it here will ice over.

Further downstream, at Billings Bridge, the ice is more established, aside from close to the bridge, which doesn't ice over in the winter. The university can still be seen in the distance; that building just peeking out is the highest building on campus. Downstream from here the river winds its way through the city, following a parallel path to the Rideau Canal, bound for the Ottawa River.

  5. It amazes me that this river DOES freeze in places where it's safe enough to skate.

  8. I think I got a little chill just looking at these photos. I remember those two winters I spent in Chicago when I was working there. There was always some point when the Chicago River would freeze over solid.

  11. @Gerald: not a good idea to swim in it this time of year... I don't know how the ducks stand it.

    @Tamera: it's quite swift... and not very accessible this time of year. The path along the river at the university is not cleared.

    @Revrunner: I'm surprised that a Virginia river would freeze over.

    @Kate: some days more than others. I'll be heading home tomorrow (weather permitting) just in time for a deep freeze!

    @EG: downstream from Billings Bridge some people make hockey rinks on that river ice.

    @Ciel: winter is always called for!

    @Norma: looks like it'll be a long winter!

    @Sharon: I believe Chicago's right in the line of fire of some serious winter weather today.

    @Tanya: schools may be closed here tomorrow!

    @MB: it's very beautiful. My favourite season!

  16. a tiny part has always wanted to experience Ottawa in winter, but now that we are having the bitter cold of -35, I don't need to.

  17. @Cheryl: we get pretty cold here!

    @RedPat: the Canal is, of course. The Canal is about a ten minute walk across campus from the river.

    @Mari: the cold is good for you!

    @Meradeth: I love the cold!

    @Karl: it is very frosty!

    @Hamilton: if you ever do come up, Winterlude in February is a good reason.
